On March 3, 1876, flakes of what looked like fresh meat fell from a clear sky over a strip of land in Bath County, Kentucky, about a hundred yards long, while a farmer’s wife was making soap on her porch. Two men who came to look tasted it and guessed lamb or venison. The explanation most often given is a flock of vultures, which disgorge their food when startled.
